yuz_germe   What is facelift (rhytidectomy) ?

Facelift is an aesthetic operation to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. It includes the reposition of the underlying tissue and the loose skin on the right direction with a proper tense. Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away.

How is facelift done ?
Facelift is performed in hospitals preferably under general anesthesia on operating conditions. Depending on the facial deformity a traditional or limited facelift surgery is planned. A traditional incision begins from the scalp at the temple, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Among these incisions only the one in front of the ear is visible. Maturation of these scars can take a year depending on the person’s genetic composition. But in this time with the hairstyle to camouflage the area, it doesn't cause any cosmetic problem for women. The scar in front of the ear is hidden inside ear curve therefore it also doesn't create a disturbing situation for men. Other scars are well concealed. Removal of excess skin is not the only purpose of this operation. It also includes reforming of loose deeper tissues with right tense and within right direction.

How is postoperative phase?

After facelift operation, a bandage is made in a way that covers the whole face with exception of nose, eyes and mouth. Application of cold to facial region is done intermittent as 10-15 minutes per hour. Patient is discharged the next day prescribed with antibiotic and analgesic. They are asked to sleep when back is elevated and to continue the cold application for a week. Drainage tubes are often removed on 2nd day. They are allowed to bath without bandages. Facial sutures are absorbable therefore removal of those sutures is not necessary. The sutures on scalp are removed on 1st week. The most seen complication of this operation is hematoma on surgical site especially on men. Drainage tubes are used for that reason and blood pressure of the patient is monitored before and after the procedure. Depending on the surgery temporary numbness and asymmetries can be seen. Avoidance from intense sun, solarium, sauna or Turkish bath and intense sportive activities is necessary for first 8 weeks. Men are allowed to shave at the end of 2nd week. Complications can be seen after any surgical intervention. Risks caused by anesthesia, hematomas on operation site, infections and delay of scar healing are common possible complications that can be seen after any surgical operation. Usage of cigarettes increases complication rate because of its negative effects on tissue oxygenation and blood flow. Especially facelift is not preferred for heavy smokers and ones who are not willing to quit before the surgery.
