Breast lift surgery is a surgical operation made to achieve more aesthetical breasts by reshaping breast tissue that is sagging because of different reasons. Breast prosthesis can be necessary if breasts do not have volume enough to complete the procedure.
Factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight gaining make the breasts grow and tighten the ligaments that fixate the breasts to thorax. The end of
pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight loss make a reduction on breast tissue but the ligaments can't retrieve their former tense. Breast tissue continues to sag with effect of gravity, hormonal changes, age and menopause. As a result primarily breast tissue, in advanced cases nipples go below the level of lower breast curve.
How is a breast lift surgery done?
Breast lifting surgery is an aesthetical procedure that should be performed in operating conditions at a hospital under general anesthesia. With this operation the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped. The nipple and areola are positioned to an upper height. Breast prosthesis can be necessary to achieve the firm appearance if breast tissue is not enough. Scars can only be around areola depending on size of the breasts. But mostly with bigger breasts operations are ended with scars which are located around areola and a vertical mark that starts from lower middle point of areola and reaches until lower curve of breast. On wider breasts as an addition to these scars there can be horizontal scar to be hidden under lower curve of the breast. Permanence of these scars depends on person’s genetic composition and taking its last shape with breasts takes 1 year.
After the surgery patient is dressed with bandages and a sports bra that is adequate for desired size of the breasts. A vacuumed pipe system called drainage tube is used to prevent leakages to build up at surgical zone. Drainage is removed within three days depending on the outcoming leakage. And the paitent is discharged the next day with a prescription for an antibiotic and an analgesic The noticable swelling of breasts after first and second day of the surgery begins to resolve after 3rd day. Cold application to upper parts of breasts and rest can comfort the patient at this period. Sports bra is used for 4 weeks. Intense sportive activities that give burden to pectoral muscles should not be performed for 8 weeks.
How is the postoperational phase of breast lift surgery?
There can be adverse events after every surgical intervention. Risk of anesthesia, hematomas at surgical site, infection and delay of wound healing are common complications that can be seen after any surgical operation. Usage of cigarettes increases complication rate because of its negative effects on tissue oxygenation and blood flow.
If a breast prosthesis is used during the surgery spesific complications for breast prosthesis are also valid for this operation. Straightened and firm breasts that are achieved as a result of surgery can show sagging after years depending on age, gravity, pregnancies, weight fluctuations. But it doesn't come to its preoperative status.
