How is breast reduction surgery done?
Breast reduction surgery is an aesthetical procedure that should be performed in operating conditions at a hospital under general anesthesia. In this operation nipples are elevated and sagging breast tissue is removed and breasts are reformed. The removed breast tissue is sent for pathological examination. As a result straighter, smaller and more aesthetic breasts are achieved. Breast surgery ends with incision marks around areola and a vertical mark that starts from lower middle point of areola and reaches until breast crease on middle sized breasts when on bigger sized breasts an additional horizontal incision mark hidden in the breast crease is added to these marks. Permanence of these scars depends on person’s genetic composition and taking its final shape with breasts takes a year.
After the surgery patient is dressed with bandages and a sports bra that is adequate for desired size of the breasts. A vacuumed pipe system called drainage tube is used to prevent leakages to pile up at surgical zone. Drainage is removed within three days depending on the outcoming leakage. And the paitent is discharged after one or two days of hospitalization with a prescription for an antibiotic and an analgesic The noticable swelling of breasts after first and second day of the surgery begins to resolve after 3rd day. Cold application to upper parts of breasts and rest can comfort the patient at this period. Sports bra is used for 4 weeks. Intense sportive activities that give burden to pectoral muscles should not be performed for 8 weeks.
How is postoperative phase of breast reduction surgery?
There can be adverse events after every surgical intervention. Risk of anesthesia, hematomas at surgical site, infection and delay of wound healing are common complications that can be seen after any surgical operation.
Straigtened and fleshy breasts that are achieved as a result of surgery can show sagging after years depending on age, gravity, pregnancies, weight gain and loss. But they don't come to its preoperative status. Asymmetry of breasts, a mostly temporary numbness and color changes around nipples, delays on wound healing, especially distinction of scars depending on person’s skin texture can be seen. Usage of cigarettes increases complication rate because of its negative effects on tissue oxygenation and blood flow.
Breast reduction is not an absolute restraint for lactating/ breast milking but the possibility of continue of breast milking skills cannot be known for certain.
