Eye aesthetics consists of surgical procedures for the aging changes at the eyelids and the structures around such as loosening, sagging and eye bags (periorbital puffiness). In a social relationship a person's mood (emotional state) is primarily reflected by eyes. Periorbital site is the first region that modifications induced by aging are seen. These modifications show themselves as excess tissue and bags on upper eyelids, bags and looseness on lower eyelids and
intense wrinkles around eyes. It makes a permanent tired, sad, sleepless and nervous expression. These modifications gradually increase with years. Especially increase of the excess tissue and sagging of upper eyelids can come to a stage that covers the eye sight. Upper eyelids and state of eyebrows, lower eyelids and mid-facial region are assessed together. On necessary conditions combined surgical interventions give more effective results. What are eye-bags on eyelids? The membrane that keeps fat packages surrounding both eyelids on their place loosens in time and results with herniation of fat packages that can be distinguished from skin deformities referred as eyebags which are more distinguishable on lower eyelids. It gives a person constantly tired, sleepless and exhausted expression.
What is a blepharoplasty operation?
Blepharoplasty is an aesthetical intervention that is made to remove the excess tissue and eye-bags on upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty is not effective on treatment of upper eyebrows sagging and looseness of lower eyelids that results with appearance of eye whites and wrinkles that expressed as "crowfoot" on lateral margins of the eye. Additional procedures like forehead lift, botox injection are performed for those problems. In upper blepharoplasty, incision is made to upper eyelid fold when in lower blepharoplasty incision is made just below to lower eyelashes. This way scars are well hidden, besides healing is more faster in this area than other areas of body and with less noticeable scars. Excess skin and fat packages that result with eyebags are removed from upper eyelid. Fat packages from lower eyelids are removed partially or extended to create a contour for lower eyelids. In some cases the puffiness is corrected by firming the loosen membrane located anterior to fat packages. Blepharoplasty surgery is an aesthetical operation that should be performed in a surgical environment in a hospital. Upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed with both local anesthesia and sedation. General anesthesia is preferred if both will be performed.
How is postoperative phase of blepharoplasty?
A bandage of thin strips that doesn't limit the eyesight is made. Bruising and swelling in periorbital zone is inevitable with differences from person to person. Therefore the cold application around eyes is started right after the surgery. Bruising and swelling begin to lessen after 3rd day and can be easily covered with make-up in a week. Patients are discharged 6-7 hours after surgery if a combine surgery isn't made. Sutures are removed in 5th day. Patients are asked to sleep with an elevated back and continue to apply cold intermittently. Avoidance from intense sun, solarium, sauna or Turkish bath and intense sportive activities is necessary for first 8 weeks.
